Glory Bound - Glory Bound (RIYL: Against Me!, Pennsylvannia, The Menzingers)

Glory Bound (Poconos, Pa)

Maybe it's because i've been a slave to the punk sounds coming out of Eastern Pennsylvania for 10 years now, but i see strong similarities in all of our bands.  As current as Glory Bound truely is, i could see them sharing the stage with The Overdrives in 1999 as easily as The Menzingers in 2009.  I can see the same in The Old Menzos for that matter.  Nevermind, just noting these bands have a timeless style, and i like it, ok?  I will say this speaks volumes on the perennial punk provided here, however.  Glory Bound may get a bit gruffier than i tend to enjoy, and they certainly get more Springsteen, or Steencore if you will, than i can handle, but goddamit are these songs catchy!  Blessed with the angst and uncertainty that every good pop-punk bands needs to be worth half a damn, these guys write the songs that keep the fists up.  Somewhere in the mix of ska coming back hard and all the beards in the past ten years, it seems people stopped dancing at punk shows and started singing along, and hard.  This used to upset me, but with the help of bands like Glory Bound i think i'll be okay. Atleast, we still jump and climb on each other.  Well done gentlemen.... and please, keep it up.  You make this state look good, damn good.

Irie Idea (RIYL: The Slackers, King Tubby, RXBandits)

Irie Idea (Portland, OR)

Smashing genre boundaries and maintaining a fluid style that is all yours is a task many attempt, but few perform with the grace of Irie Idea. Infused with a punk ethos layered to the bone, Irie Idea exemplifies tradititonal ska and reggae music while borrowing from all historically important styles of music, namely Rocksteady and Blues. Delivering a sound so beautifully complex and autonomous is no simple task. One wouldn't dare assume such a mission be executed by less than five, maybe even six musicians. Irie Idea offer a composite, intricate blend of rock 'n' roll and ska music in all it's gorgeous and genuine forms without such luxuries as Horn Sections, Keys, or even Bass Guitar. One could argue that a two-piece band simply could not pull off such a sonically voluminous record. That one has simply not heard Irie Idea.

Glocca Morra/The Greek Favourites Split

Glocca Morra (Miami, Philadelphia)
The Greek Favourites (Poconos, Pa)

This split is a refreshing chapter in the ever expanding book of noodle. Both GM and TGF apply the visceral, passionate, and strung out aggression that drew me to punk-rock from the very beginning while maintaining an air of maturity (without arrogance) that is almost lost in both punk and indie music. Glocca Morra, moving to Philadelphia on a whim from Miami, FL, have busted their asses to prove themselves as a permanent fixture. The Greek Favourites formed in the Pocono's (PA), growing up with neighbors like The Holy Mess (and slightly further neighbors The Menzingers, Captain We're Sinking, etc). A real gem of eastern Pa. Can't wait to see what's in store for these dudes.
